I have great news for Android™ phone and device owners: OverDrive has released the beta version of an audiobook app for Android, which enables users to download MP3 audiobooks directly to their mobile device from your library’s ‘Virtual Branch’ website. This audiobook app for Android offers the same superior listening experience as the desktop version of OverDrive® Media Console™, with popular features like resume from furthest played point and custom bookmarking.
While in beta, OverDrive’s audiobook app for Android will be available for download exclusively at the OverDrive Media Console page on OverDrive.com. When version 1.0 is released, we will update your Help pages. During this beta period, users will be encouraged to send any support issues and feedback directly to us. Super easy to download and works great with my Droid Eris! Thanks for the very specific and simple download instructions too, it will be very helpful for assisting patrons.
My husband and I are glad to see you’ve released an Android app! We saw the instructions for how to download and install the APK, but we don’t see how to download content. Is there a way to download content from our devices, or do we have to download them separately and put them in a library somewhere for the app to see them? We don’t see anything explaining this — maybe we’re just missing it?
Installing was pretty easy although it would be easier if it was in the Android Marketplace.
It took me a while to figure out how to get content onto the app though.
MP3 books seem to work well! It would be great if it can support WMA audiobooks!
@Gardenwife, Yes, you can download MP3 audiobooks directly to your device by logging onto your library’s download website on your Android phone. You browse the collection and check out an MP3 audiobook title in your browser. Once you get the download link, all you have to do is click on it and the Android app will launch and begin the download to your device.
@Sean, as soon as it is out of beta, you can expect to see it in the Android Marketplace. Glad it’s worked well for you so far.
@Gardenwife, I was able to search for titles on my phone at search.overdrive.com and was able to download directly into the app. I was using Wi-Fi to speed up the downloads.
@Daniel, are you planning WMA support or is that an android limitation?
@Sean, right now we just have support for MP3 audiobooks. if anything changes, you’ll find out here first.
