Yesterday, we released the 2010 stats from libraries and schools in the OverDrive network. When I was gathering the information, one number stood out: eBook checkouts at libraries and schools were up 200% in 2010. After the surge in Christmas traffic on ‘Virtual Branch’ websites, it’s clear that libraries and schools have become a significant source for eBooks.
The boom doesn’t stop with eBooks, though. Audiobook checkouts were also up 52% and 6.6 billion minutes of spoken word audio were downloaded in 2010. Overall, more than 15 million eBook, audiobook, music, and video titles were downloaded from libraries and schools worldwide.
One million new library customers and students signed on to to access free eBooks, audiobooks, and more from ‘Virtual Branch’ websites, last year. Those users had thousands of digital titles to choose from, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Eat, Pray, Love were the Most Downloaded Adult Fiction and Nonfiction books of 2010, respectively, in both eBook and audiobook formats. You can find all the Most Downloaded Adult Fiction and Nonfiction titles, as well as additional stats in the full press release.
