In 1996, the Chief of Staff (CSAF) of the US Air Force created a professional reading list to develop a common frame of reference among Air Force members – and every CSAF since then has continued the Professional Reading Program. The books are always available for check-out in our over 100 US Air Force libraries around the world. The 2011 list was selected with an eye to titles that were available electronically.
The Air Force, along with all military services, has a high number of deployments and our Airmen are often on the go. Having titles available in downloadable format as well as the traditional formats makes it easier for our Airmen to learn about leadership, military heritage and military strategy. There’s something for everyone – from Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin to Cyber War by Richard A. Clarke and Robert Knake.
When the 14 title CSAF list was released in January, we bought all nine titles offered by OverDrive. So our customers could find this new collection easily, OverDrive staff added a special category for the CSAF books, front and center on our landing page.
We also asked OverDrive to work with the publishers of the remaining titles on a case by case basis – to date, one has agreed to add their title in EPUB format for us. We’re using the OverDrive Reports function to closely monitor waiting lists. One of our reference librarians designed a brochure template for all libraries to customize and hand out to their customers with library holdings – and information on how to sign up for an OverDrive account. We’re adding more customers daily and when they join to read the CSAF books, we hope they’ll stick around to enjoy our other titles. Time, and the Reports function, will tell.

Hi Melinda,
I’m not sure if this will actually reach you or not, but I was wondering if a reading list had been developed by the Navy. When I read about the CSAF book list I thought it was a wonderful idea, but serving the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, a Navy-centric list would be great for our community!
Thanks!

Michelle, I contacted Nilya Carrato from the Navy General Library program – her edited response follows:
Great question – the Navy does indeed have a reading list – the official name is the Navy Professional Reading Program (NPRP), though a lot of sailors ask for either the MCPON (Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy) Reading List or CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) Reading list. The program is run by the Naval War College and the list/details are at http://www.navyreading.navy.mil.
Navy also has an Overdrive account with lots of copies of all the books available in all formats available: See http://navy.lib.overdrive.com – with a browse link for “Professional Reading”.
It’s open to anyone to browse but to create a borrowing account a Navy customer must go through the Navy Knowledge Online portal (http://www.nko.navy.mil). After logging in they’ll go to the Reference Tab – and Econtent Audio/EBooks, select OverDrive and then create an account. That way we can ensure they’re Navy and have access to our content. After the initial NKO -> OverDrive account creation they’ll be able to log-in directly at http://navy.lib.overdrive.com. Become a Fan of Navy General Libraries!

I am in the Air Force and have an overdrive account. I am trying to access this reading list on an Android device. When I select add a website, what do I enter for Find a library to get the Air Force Library to check out titles?
Hi Matt, the quickest way is to go to “Get Books,” under the zip code search “Browse for Libraries,” click “United States,” and the Air Force appears in the alpha list as “US Air Force.” You can hit the “Star” icon when you pick any branch, and save the website for later use. Let me know if that works.
I was curious about the brochure template you mentioned. Is there a way to access that template, or can you send it? Thanks!
Hi,
How can I get access if my base does not have a library. I am a reservist and civilian employee at Dobbins ARB, GA.
Thanks
