If you’ve been following my Most Downloaded blogs in recent months, you’re probably tired of hearing about Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Fifty Shades. So even though the beloved wizard continues to cast a spell on Juvenile Fiction lists and E.L. James’ racy fan fiction series continues to steam up Adult Fiction downloads, I’ll give these perennial favorites a break this month and focus on other titles that sizzled in June.
North America was sweltering, and no title radiated like Cheryl Strayed’s, “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.” After Oprah showed “Wild” some love by selecting the title for her monthly book club, Strayed’s memoir about a life-changing hike took the digital universe by storm, topping the Most Downloaded Adult Nonfiction eBook chart in the United States. “Wild” also secured high marks as one of the most downloaded audiobooks for the U.S. and Canada, sharing the lists with Janet Evanovich’s newest, “Wicked Business.”
Also popular in the western hemisphere were William Landay’s “Defending Jacob,” John Grisham’s “Calico Joe,” and Nic Sheff’s YA audiobook “Tweak,” which recounts the author’s addiction to controlled substances and his rocky journey to recovery.
The United Kingdom saw a lot of the usual suspects, especially in audiobooks, where Karl Pilkington’s “An Idiot Abroad,” the basis for a television show of the same name, continues to chart almost two years after its debut. Two eBooks gaining steam over the past two months in the U.K. are “First Thrills,” a compilation from Lee Child, and “Chill Factor,” the latest in Stuart Pawson’s Charlie Priest Series.
Kate Wilhelm’s “Death of an Artist” is keeping the mystery genre white hot Down Under; the title has appeared on Most Downloaded lists in Australia each month since publication. Nora Roberts hasn’t relinquished her hold, however—her titles account for half of Australia’s top ten most-downloaded adult fiction eBooks. For a little light reading, the Aussies are turning to Anh Do’s “The Happiest Refugee.” The comedian’s autobiography has rested atop the most circulated eBooks for almost two years and shows no sign of slowing.
We organize the Most Downloaded Books from the Library lists according to subject and format, based on activity at more than 18,000 libraries in the OverDrive global network. You can view these lists and add the titles to your collection in Content Reserve.
